CONCLUSION

The chemical energy stored in the food was released when it was burned. This heat/thermal energy raised the temperature of the water in the small can. Thermal energy was transferred from an object of high temperature to one of lower temperature. This process is usually called heat transfer, although it is the thermal energy that is really being transferred. Heat is the amount being transferred. The amount of heat or thermal energy transferred, from one object to another can be measured in joules, which is the unit of energy. But more often you see heat measured in calories. A calorie (cal) is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree celsius.

The relationship between joules and calories is 1 cal = 4.186J.

In my experiment I used 125 ml of water.

125ml = 125grams.

1 cal = 1 gram x (diference in temperature) one degree celsius.

For example Reese puff#1- When it burned it raised 125 grams of water by 2.2 degrees celsius.

Therefore: 275 cal = 125 gram x 2.2 degrees celsius.

Resse puff#1 released 275 cal of energy.
I used the energy in the food to heat a can of water. Foods have stored chemical energy. When we eat them, the stored energy is converted by our bodies so we can do work.

My htpothesis was wrong. I thought that the larger marshmallow would have released more energy that the smaller nuts. But the experiment shows that size doesn't count when it comes to the amount of stored energy in foods. We should therefore eat foods chosen by their value and not by their size.
