Method

  1. Using a black marker, six petri dishes were appropriately labelled (control, salt water, Listerine, Fluorinse, Biotene, and Neem mouthwash).

  2. One hour after eating, the two subjects were asked to rinse their mouth with tap water. The back of the mouth was then swabbed with a sterile Q Tip. (Control)

  3. The Q-Tip was then swabbed on to the petri dish labelled Control.

  4. The petri dish was then sealed with Saran Wrap.

  5. The petri dish was incubated at room temperature for four days.

  6. At the end of the four days, the Saran Wrap was removed.

  7. A picture of this petri dish was then taken in order to record and compare the amount of bacteria grown.

  8. Steps 2-7 were then repeated for the other mouthwashes ( salt water, Listerine, Fluorinse, Biotene, and Neem).
  9. The amount of bacteria grown was recorded and graphed (see Observations).
