FAMILY LIFE When the shrike chicks hatch they are altricial which means they are born blind, without feathers, and helpless. They are about 3 grams at hatching. They will weigh up to 50 grams as adults. The mother and father take care of the chicks. Both parents keep the chicks protected, warm, and fed. The parents teach the chicks how to fly and find food. The chicks must also learn to make nests. The parents teach the chicks all these things. It takes the chicks a year to become adults. Here in Saskatchewan, the family breaks apart in September when it is time to migrate.
