ENDANGERED

The loggerhead shrike has become threatened in Saskatchewan for many reasons. First, people plow up the shrike’s habitat to plant grass or field crops. This habitat loss is actually the biggest threat facing the shrike. Second, cats, dogs, weasels, and coyotes hunt them. Third, pesticides and other chemicals are harmful to the shrike and some of its prey like beetles and grasshoppers. Fourth, shrikes are also destroyed when flying near roads to catch bugs and then getting hit by trucks. Finally, a few people even shoot shrikes because they kill songbirds or stick their prey on thorns and barbed wire fences near people’s yards.
