Question:

Is algae ethanol an environmentally friendly alternative to food crop-based fuels and petroleum-based fuels?

Purpose:

To produce algae ethanol as an environmentally friendly alternative to food crop-based fuels and petroleum-based fuels.

Hypothesis:

Algae ethanol is an environmentally friendly alternative to food crop-based fuels and petroleum-based fuels.

Variables:

For purposes of this experiment following variables were identified and studied:

Independent Variables:

  • Different fuels (ethanol, food crop-based fuels and petroleum-based fuels) used to heat water.

  • Ethanol produced from algae grown in different types of water - fresh water, river water and pond water.

Dependent Variable:

  • Amount of fuel used - algae ethanol, food crop-based fuels and petroleum-based fuels to heat the same amount of water.

  • Heat energy generated by algae ethanol, food crop-based fuels and petroleum-based fuels to heat the same amount of water.

Control Variables:

  • Specific gravity of ethanol produced from algae grown in different types of water - fresh water, river water and pond water.

  • Specific gravity of food crop-based fuels and petroleum-based fuels.
