The Spinal Cord
The spinal cord is a big part of
your body. It is also an important part of the nervous system. The spinal cord
contains a lot of your body’s neurons. It contains about 5 million
neurons. Signals from your nerves travel
through your spinal cord to your brain. Once the signal reaches the brain, it
interprets the message and sends a signal back through the spinal cord to your
motor nerves.
When the spinal cord is broken, a
person can become paralyzed. If the
break occurs in your lower back a person will be paralyzed from the waist
down. A person with this condition is
called a paraplegic. If the break
occurs in your neck a person will be paralyzed from the neck down. A person with this condition is called a
quadriplegic.
