diatoms

1. Ceratium-Dinoflagellates

Dinoflagellates are microscopic plants. They occur in the billions. Dinoflagellates love tropical waters. If you look in a microscope you can

see that. Dinoflagellates come in lots of different forms. In the photo the things that look like arms are used to def end them against

   predators

     Vorticellid ciliate

"Ciliate" in latin means eyelash, and if you look in the picture you can see why.

3. Diatoms Chains

This type of diatom is the one we did our experiment on. If you put these diatoms under a microscope you would find that they appear in chains of single cells so hence the name chain diatom. Also this type of diatom is the diatom that populates the oceans the most. They can be seen on algae or even on whales.

4. Dinoflagellates Pyrocystis

This type of dinoflagellate creates its own bioluminescence. Scientists call this “sea sparkle”.

 5. Cyanobacteria

In English this phytoplankton is called blue green algae. This type of phytoplankton is the oldest on the planet. To survive Cyanobacteria has a trick. It can photosynthesize. That means it is closer to bacteria than algae.
