Pop music
Pop music (sometimes known as soft rock and rock/pop) is a genre of popular music originating (believe it or not) from classical and folk music. Pop often has “emotional” lyrics most of the time talking about love or sex. Out of all our music choices it is the most danceable to, a funky beat and clear (but sometimes repetitive) harmony/melody are probably to blame. Sometimes pop incorporates with disco and techno using their easy procession to lead the song. But what makes pop so unique is that it could include elements from country, rock or hip-hop! A little pop history: Pop music was basically born as soon as artists started to mention their love lives more then once in their songs. The first one we could find was Frank Sanatera, who began to add lyrics and songs about his previous relationships. After him came Elvis Presley. Of course, after him came the Beatles, the pop music sensation that rocked the world, love was their primary topic and that’s probably what made them so popular. As the years passed other amazing artists came and went, but around the 1960’s you where beginning to get a lot more love, eventually by the 1990’s pop music was just about as flirtatious as you can get! And there are no signs of it stopping! The pop music we chose to use in our experiment was; Britney Spears and the Beatles. The Beatles being in the “less-sexual” part of pop history and Britney being during the “most-sexual”.
Rap music
We have also chosen rap music for the navy beans because we are trying to have a wide variety of different genres of music. Some rap artists that you might recognize are 50 cent, Snoop dog, Eminem or Queen Latifa. The Artists that we have already chosen for our experiment are Snoop dog and Emenem. Rap music also known as hip hop music originated from the United States of America in the early 1970’s but became more popular in more countries in the 1980’s. By early 2000 it was among the best selling genres of music. Rap/hip hop has lots of base and a very strong and loud beat. There is a rapper (the name for a rap artist) who sings and a D.J is the name for someone who works the music and sometimes fiddles around with it. Unlike other kinds of music, in rap music, the rapper doesn’t sing as much as talk with a style and rhyme.
Heavy metal music
Heavy metal music is a kind of music that started in the mid -1960’s, later perfected in the 1970’s. Mixed blues and rock collaborate to create a disorienting guitar and drum driven sound. Heavy metal (also called metal) has reproduced more then 20 metal based genres. Including, trash metal, black metal, new age metal and early metal (early metal is for example, Guns ‘n roses, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath). In the1970’s and 1980’s metal began to attract more listeners. As soon as it became popular other artists began to meld it and create their own version (thus creating the sub-metal genres). The fans of metal where given the title of “metalhead” or “headbanger”. We can only assume from the name, that the fans of metal liked to bang their heads well they listened (it could be, the word head is mentioned in both of those names!) A quote from Allmusic.com; “of all the myriad forms, heavy metal is the most extreme in terms of volume, machismo, and theatricality.” Personally if I’m listening to metal to be good it has to be loud. Because it’s so loud, most parents are a little hesitant about it. And because the parents don’t like it, the kids like it more. In a metal band there is usually a bassist, a drummer, a lead guitarist, a backup guitarist (not always needed) and a lead singer, who either doesn’t play an interment, or does guitar or base, not usually drums, because the drummer has no energy to speak. The drummers usually have to have enough energy to make the precision (which is loud) and to do the accessional drum-solo. The first metal bands used the keyboards and the organ on regular bases, sadly no one uses them anymore. The lead singer can have a varied type of voice, from gruff to screechy, but in metal the louder you are, the better. That also goes for concerts. A little Metal history; metal came around in the 1960-70’s and produced many great legendary artists like Jimi Hendrix and Lead Zeppelin. Who have both either died or had a band member die. Metal kept adapting and changing, and now it’s still adding new sub-genres. We selected Marilyn Manson and Led Zeppelin to represent the metal group in our project, because Marilyn uses an “invisible sound wave” in his music, that apparently, upsets dogs, and Led Zeppelin uses a lot of base.
Classical music
Classical music originated from many different cultures, but many started in Europe, during the renaissance era. But it really started getting popular between 1550 and 1990. Classical music is the most sophisticated of all our choices, and is the more popular among “older” people. Some parents believe that if you play classical music around their baby (ies), their brains (the baby’s brains, not the parents) mature smarter and faster, this is yet to be proven true. When people think of classical music they often are reminded of the piano. But classical music can be played on almost ever single instrument. The reason that you always think of piano is because of the very famous musicians like Bach, Mozart and Beethoven who play/compose the piano a lot. Even though Beethoven played/composed more romantic music then classical. But there are not just those three composers, there are many, many more (see graph below). Our chosen classical artists are, Beethoven (bottom left) and Bach (bottom right), because we find their vibes might soothe the plants.
