The sun is amazing, it is bigger than anything you can imagine, but still it is really just a medium sized star. The diameter of the sun is about 100 times wider then the earth. A million planets can fit into the sun. It takes millions of years for the energy from the center of the sun to reach the sun's surface but it only takes 8 minutes for it to travel the 93 million miles to the earth. The sun has burned for more than 45 billion years and will continue to burn for several billion more years. It is a massive collection of gas; it is mostly made up of hydrogen and helium. Because of its size, it has immense gravity, enough gravity force to hold all the planets in their orbits around the sun. All the energy used since the beginning of time is equal to the energy that the sun gives off in one second. Without the sun there would be nothing for us to eat, plants could not make food, they couldn't make oxygen and no animals could breath including us. Without the sun, earth would be freezing. The sun makes all the weather on our planet.
Solar Energy means light or heat that comes from the sun. Solar energy is clean it does not pollute the air, land or water. There is a lot of it and that means that solar energy is a renewable fuel. By using solar energy, we don't need to use as many fossit fuels, like coal, oil and natural gas that are non-renewable fuels. These fuels are limited and as they shrink, they will become more expensive. Coal, oil and natural gas also cause pollution and add to the green house gases that are causing global warming. If more people used solar energy to heat their homes and run their electricity our environment would be a lot cleaner.
