Introduction to Genetics
One of the most up to date and fast moving areas of science is Genetics, the study of genes. Genes are instruction manuals determining how living things grow, develop, and carry out life processes. These instruction manuals for all living things come in the form of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is found coiled in chromosomes which lie in all cells. Segments of DNA are called genes. These amazing recipes hold the key to how your body works, looks, and behaves which lies in each and every cell in your body, all 100 trillion of them.
Geneticists are the scientists who research this connection between all living organisms. They study the transfer of biological characteristics and differences from one parent organism to offspring.
Inside each cell, there is a nucleus (the control centre for the cell). Click on the topics to explore how deep we have to go to find the centre and shining treasure that explains who we are and why we are that way!
