A Look at Global Warming
Greenhouse Effect

Global warming in Canada is presently a very big problem. It is killing animal species in Canada's Arctic. This is due to the increase of temperature which melts the ice that the species live on. The species of animals that depend on the ice in the arctic are polar bears drowning (Battis, 2005). These bears need the ice to hunt on. But since the ice is always getting thinner with global warming, polar bears are falling in the water and drowning (Battis, 2005).
According to data from American scientists, the coverage of sea ice in the Arctic has declined for a fourth consecutive year. This shows a dangerous long-term trend. In 2005, ice amounts decreased the most in the century. On the twenty-first of September that year, the area covered by ice decreased 5.32 million square kilometres, the lowest recorded since 1978 drowning (Battis, 2005). If this continues, the ice covering the Arctic Ocean will have completely disappeared by the end of the century drowning (Battis, 2005).
There is evidence that the ice is not building back up in the winter. Between January and August 2005, the temperature was two to three degrees Celsius warmer than average across most of the Arctic Ocean. In the summer of 2005, north of the Siberia coast, was completely ice-free between August 15 and September 28 (Battis , 2005 ). The last time there was an ice-free Arctic was millions of years ago. Due to the heat birds who normally who migrate south now stay at home in the north throughout the winter (Battis, 2005).
