PROJECT INFO

Many people are trying to help sage
grouse like conservation groups, wildlife agencies, landowners, industry workers, ecotourists, the general public, and the government.

These are some things that are being
done to help sage grouse survive. People
are putting caps on power poles so that
eagles and hawks can’t sit on them to spot
and hunt the sage grouse. Visitors should
stay 200 metres back from leks between
March 15th and May 15th.

The sage grouse are protected as
endangered in Saskatchewan in The
Wild Species at Risk Regulations,
The Wildlife Act, and by the
Committee on the Status of
Endangered Wildlife in Canada. People
cannot hunt them and some of the sage
grouse habitat is protected too.

The government has set aside habitat in the Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan. Unfortunately, some governments raised taxes on native pasture which put pressure on ranchers to increase the number of livestock in each pasture so that the ranchers could pay the extra money. The extra livestock ate the sage which the grouse needed. Therefore, the government should look at cutting taxes on pasture land so that there would not have to be so many animals in the pasture and there would be more sage for the grouse.
