What
am I doing?
My name is Allison. I am an 11 year old girl from Victoria, B.C. I'm testing local water
sources that my family might use if there was an emergency, like an earthquake,
or if the water system got contaminated. Here are the water sources I chose and
why I chose them: · Tap water –Tap water is my control. If the water system did fail I would not have tap water but I thought it was still a good idea to test it. ·
Water bottle – I have a few water
bottles lying around the house which in the case of an emergency I could use. · My family’s boat – My family has a sail boat with approx. 154 L water tank. ·
Rain water – If an emergency
happened at a rainy time of year that is definitely a good water source. ·
Bowker Creek – A local creek
which has quite a bit of water; however it also has a large residence of ducks ·
Filtered water – My family has a
filter which we use when we go camping. I decided to filter water from Bowker
Creek because it was likely to be contaminated. ·
Iodine treated water – There was
an old container of iodine (which my family had used before on camping trips) at
home and I was curious as to whether it still worked. Again I used water from
Bowker Creek. ·
Earthquake supply – In case of an
earthquake my family has some water in our basement. It has been there for a few
years, so bacteria may have grown.
The bacteria I’m testing
for is E. coli, general coliforms
(using Coliscan) and other bacteria (using Total Count or TC). |
