Abstract
Objective: To compare which fabrics provide the best sun protection (lowest transmission of ultraviolet light).
Methods: Using a Lambra UV/VIS spectrophotometer, we conducted an analysis of 26 samples of fabrics, to determine which fabric sample had the lowest ultraviolet transmission (highest absorption rate). We measured and compared three groups of fabrics. Those coated by home washing in DermaDoctor detergent, home washed (coated) in Puraderm detergent, and our control group of uncoated fabrics. The fabrics varied by material (cotton, wool, polyester and cotton/polyester blend) and color (black and white).
Results: Our Analysis showed that black wool coated with either Puraderm or DermaDoctor provided the best ultraviolet protection compared uncoated fabrics. Areas under the curve (AUC) revealed no significant differences to discriminate weight, weave, stretch, and moisture.
Conclusion: The use of factory manufactured Ultraviolet Protection Coating and detergent based UPF additive reduced the transmittance of Ultraviolet light in some colors and materials. However this particular study suggests that a black coated wool weave provides the best protection factor against Ultraviolet radiation.
