Finding the Fit for Your Knee: A New Study for ACL Replacement with Synthetic Materials

Grade Category : 7-9
Team Size: 1
Subject Area: Health/Sport Science
Project Type:Experimental

Language: English
Summary of Project:

Canadians undergo surgeries for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) replacement. ACL is replaced by operating the hamstring or patellar and has many disadvantages. In medical field, there is lack of knowledge in using synthetic material for ACL replacement. My project investigated suitability of synthetic materials. Tension and fatigue experiments were simulated for ACL movements using my designed apparatus. I found Gore-Tex is the best synthetic material.

Software Tools used: Firefox, DreamWeaver, Word, photo shop, adobe acrowrite, acroread, paint shop, xls

Hardware Tools used: Instron device, my own apparatus. ruler, various tools to build the apparatus, data collection

Source of Idea: My Cousin underwent ACL surgery
Many scientific process and skills used and developed throughout the project.

Awards Won:

1) ASM International Award for projects using materials,
2) Weizmann Award for Innovation and creativity; The projects that encourage scientists of the future
3) The Pfizer Canada Award of Excellence for the most outstanding
project at any division in the fair

4) Best award in the fair
5) Selected to represent the Ottawa region at Canada Wide Science Fair in Nova Scotia.

6) Many awards won from the past science fairs but not listed
