Experiment

In my experiment I used the following materials as testing insulators: fibreglass insulation (R12), 1” corrugated foam, .5” acoustical ceiling tiles and 1” rigid insulation. I used a 10” hardboard box and a 16” hardboard box to place each of the insulators in for testing. To measure the sound intensity in decibels, I used a sound level meter and for my source of sound I used an alarm clock.

To begin the experiment, after ensuring there were no other outside sources of sound,  I determined what my control value was by recording the sound level of the ringing alarm clock inside the 10” box and the 16” box without any insulators. I then placed an insulator inside each box to cover the entire interior walls, set the alarm clock to ring and measured, in decibels, what the sound level was outside of the box for each of the insulator materials.

Can You Keep That Noise Down?

Sound

Did you know…

One of the earliest researchers of sound was Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher and mathematician, who experimented on the vibration of strings in the 500’s B.C.
