Hypothesis

I hypothesize that transgenic plants are the most suitable systems for the expression of the biologically active IL-13 and CTB-IL-13 recombinant proteins. I hypothesize that the plant-produced IL-13 protein can induce immune deviation to prevent T1D in the model NOD mice. Further I hypothesize that CTB-IL-13 is the better candidate for induction of immune deviation as CTB will facilitate binding of the IL-13 domain to mucosal cells. The final goal of this research is the development of a plant-based, low-cost, edible herb medicine for immunotherapy of autoimmune T1D (Fig. 1).
