Conclusions

Based on these results, meditation had no effect on memory. The researcher thought that the increased gamma waves from meditation may lead to an improved memory, but was proven wrong. Different types of meditation may have different effects on short-term memory.

Subjects

  • 1 x 8-year old
  • 1 x 9-year old
  • 1 x Adult

Procedure

  1. Showed the subjects the numbers for the test for 30 seconds.
  2. Subjects turned over number page and wrote down the numbers in the correct order.
  3. Subjects meditated by analyzing a candle flame for 3 minutes
  4. Subjects repeated steps 1 and 2.

The results for meditation show that meditation keeps the scores at the same level. The adult subject's score (Subject 3) was the highest with 100 percent for his before test and 100 percent for his after test. Subjects 1 and 2 had a difference of 40 percent, but Subject 2 had a decrease in percentage of accuracy, and Subject 3 had an increase in percentage of accuracy. Overall, these scores cancel out each other (Click chart to enlarge).
