Conclusions

A similarity between Fischman's (04) results and these results are that the adult subject in this research had a decrease in memory and Fischman's subjects also showed a decrease. This opposes the additional results in this experiment which found that sugar improved memory for the younger subjects. Based on these results, sugar has the potential to improve memory.

Subjects

  • 1 x 9-year old
  • 1 x 10-year old
  • 1 x Adult

Procedure

  1. Showed the subjects the numbers for the test for 30 seconds.
  2. Subjects turned over number page and wrote down the numbers in the correct order.
  3. Subjects drank 8 ounces of a high-sugar sports drink.
  4. Subjects waited 3 minutes and repeated steps 1 and 2.

The results of the sugar variable showed that the younger subjects have an increase in accuracy opposed to the adult subject (Subject 1) who had a decrease in accuracy. The percentage of correct answers decreased by ten percent for the adult subject. The before score was 100 percent and the after score decreased to 90 percent. The scores for the younger subjects (Subjects 2 and 3) increased in accuracy, and there was a 10 to 20 percent increase. The majority of scores showed an increase (Click chart to enlarge).
