Most Common Types of Gears

Spur Gears

A Spur Gear is the most common type of gear.  Spur Gears are used in many machines.  Such as a wind up toys and alarm clocks.

Bevel Gears

The Bevel Gear is also called the 90 degree angle gear system.  Bevel Gears can also be on other angels.

Worm Gears

Worm gears are used when large reductions are needed.  This means  that the speed slows down and the torque in motorized equipment increases. The Worm Gear has set interesting properties that no other gear has set.

Rack and Pinion Gears

Rack and Pinion Gears convert rotation into liner motion.  An example of Rack and Pinion Gears are steering in a car. The pinion Gear is the normal round gear.  The Rack gear is a flat gear that has teeth that mesh with the pinion gear.

Helical Gears

Helical Gears are cut at a angle.  They mesh to thrust load.  The Helical gear is used in almost all car transmissions.  The reason for this is because they run much more smoothly than the Spur gear.
