White Blood Cells- Also called leukocytes. They fight infection and harmful substances that invade the body. Usually, they are round and colorless. Some kill bacteria by surrounding and digesting them. Others produce antibodies. (World Book, 2001)
Red Blood Cells- Resembles a donut. It is shapes like a disk. Carries oxygen to the tissues and removes carbon dioxide. Also called erythrocytes. (World Book, 2001)
Platelets- Also known as thrombocytes. They are disk-shaped. If a blood vessel is cut, platelets stick to the edges of the cut and stick to each other. They produce chemicals that lead to the formation of a blood clot. They help stop bleeding. (World Book, 2001)
HIV- It causes the AIDS virus. It is transmitted through blood, semen or other bodily secretions. (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006)
AIDS- Short for Acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It is a fatal, incurable disease caused by a HIV. It can harm the brain and demolish the body's ability to fight illness.
Hemoglobin- It is a protein carried by red blood cells. It takes oxygen from the lungs and brings it to the tissues. It is made up of two proteins that stick together. (Bridges, 2002; Wikipedia contributors, 2006).
Plasma- The other part of plasma is made up of proteins, dissolved nutrients and waste products. Plasma is the liquid, straw colored part of blood.  Plasma is made up of 90 percent water. It makes 50 to 60 percent of blood. (World Book, 2001), (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006)
Bone Marrow- Where blood cells are created. (American Red Cross, 2005)
Anemia- A disorder in which there is a low red blood cell count (American Red Cross, 2005)
ABO- The main blood groups system which consists of A, B, O or AB (American Red Cross, 2005)
Blood- It is a Fluid which circulates throughout the body. It distributes nutrients, and oxygen. (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006)
Malaria – An infectious disease causing chills fever and sweating due to the parasitic infection of red blood cells which is transmitted by the bite of an infected female mosquito. (Pepper, T., January 14 2003)
Blood transfusion- Transfer of blood or blood products from one person to another. (Daily News Health, 2004)
Blood poisoning- It is when bacteria has a presence in the blood (Blood Book, 2006)
Rh Disease- It is a diseases in a fetus or newborn in which there is an incompatibility between the mother and the baby’s blood. (March of Dimes, 2006)
Antibodies- Antibodies are proteins that destroy bacteria and viruses or makes them harmless (World Book, 2001)
Villius- Villius are tiny fingerlike projections on the walls of the small intestine (Word, Book, 2001)
Protein- Makes blood clot and fights infections. (World Book, 2001)
The Circulatory system- The Circulatory system consists of the heart, a vast network of blood vessels, and blood itself. (World Book, 2001)
Sickle Cell anemia- Inherited blood disorder which causes anemia and pain. (Kugler, M., March 27 2006)
