If the police pull a driver over for unsafe/drunk driving the police normally use a breathalyzer to test if the person has a blood alcohol content above the legal drinking level (0.08). To decide if they need to do a breathalyzer test first the police do certain physical tests. Some are more well known than others. While watching the person do the tests the police are looking for certain sings of impairment.

STANDING ON ONE LEG
Instructions:
1. Stand on one leg
2. Count out loud by ones starting at a thousand (1001, 1002, 1003...) until the police tell you to stop
What the police are looking for:
1. Using their arms to balance
2. Hopping on one leg to keep balance
3. Not counting in order
4. Putting the other foot on the ground before the police tell them to
COUNTING
Instructions:
1. Count either backwards or forwards by ones or by threes
What the police are looking for:
1. Forgetting numbers
2. Losing concentration
3. Getting confused
WALK AND TURN
Instructions:
1. Take nine steps in a straight line heel-to-toe
2. Turn on one one foot and continue nine steps heel-to-toe in the opposite direction
What the police are looking for:
1. Can't keep balance during the instructions
2. Starts before the end of the instructions
3. Stops to catch balance
4. Doesn't walk heel-to-toe
5. Uses their arms for balance
6. Loses balance while turning
7. Takes the wrong number of steps
FOLLOW A LINE
Instructions:
1. Try to walk a straight line on a flat surface

1. Starting before the end of the instructions
2. Loses balance
3. Stops to regain balance
