Seeing DNA with the Naked Eye

Method

1. Peel and chop the onion and put it into the blender with ¼ cup of warm tap water and a teaspoon of salt. Blend the mixture until smooth.
2. Put that mixture into a small bowl. Then add ¼ cup of liquid soap. Set for 5 minutes stirring with a toothpick to prevent foam.
3. Line a small strainer with coffee filter paper and set it over the custard cup. Put mixture from the first two steps into the strainer. Let the mixture drip into the cup until there is at least one tablespoon of liquid.
4. Add one eighth of a teaspoon of the meat tenderizer. Mix it with a toothpick for 5 minutes.
5. Slowly pour some of the rubbing alcohol into the mixture so that the volume is doubled.
6. Shine a light down on the mixture and watch from the side. Strands of DNA should rise up from the cell debris into the alcohol layer. If you stir gently, the strands will stick together.
7. After a few hours go back and check every once in a while to see what has happened to the DNA.
