Procedure

for Objective A : Mapping

Mapped three seasons of growth of smooth brome, creeping thistle, and creeping bellflower in Whispering Woods.

Used a base map provided by The City of Calgary Natural Areas Department to plot the locations of the invasive plants.

Field mapping done by hand, and by GPS coordinates for intended later digital compilation.

Seasonal Growth and Mapping Dates:

  • 2003 data recorded in spring 2004 prior to new growth
  • 2004 data recorded in spring 2005
  • 2005 data recorded in fall 2005
Created digital maps of 2003 data, and submitted a Canada Wide Virtual Science Fair website on Whispering Woods in 2004.

Created additional set of digital maps in 2006, using more detailed base maps obtained from The City of Calgary Natural Areas Department.

Ground mapping proved more accurate for creating digital maps than GPS mapping; did not have software to input digital GPS information.

Used Adobe Photoshop CS to create map with all information in one file, by putting different years’ growth on different layers for easy access.
