Problem
Which Liquid Best Germinates A Bean Seed?
Abstract
Our experiment this year was “Which liquid makes a bean seed germinate the
fastest?” We used regular tap water, sugar water (tap water with sugar) salt
water (tap water with salt) and milk. We put 5 beans in each one, to make sure
we didn’t get bad results due to a bad bean. After the experiment was completed,
the results were as follows:
The beans in the sugar water had the most seeds germinate. It had 2 out of 5
seeds sprout. The tap water had 1 out of 5 seeds sprout. And both salt water and
milk had none sprout. This surprised both of us because we both predicted that
the tap water would have done the best. We also didn’t know that the salt water
and milk wouldn’t do anything at all. This experiment proved our hypothesis
wrong.
So, our conclusion is that the sugar water helped the seed germinate better than
the rest, regular tap water came in second and the salt water and milk tied for
last place, both having none of their seeds germinate.
Hypothesis
We both predicted that the normal water would work better for germinating bean
seeds because that is what everyone has always used for plants.
Variables
Independent Variables:
1) The independent variable in this experiment was the solution we used in the
tests.
2) Size of bean.
Dependent Variables:
1) The seeds germinate
2) Bigger beans need more liquid.
Controlled Variables:
- temperature
- light
- amount of liquids
- time we checked it at
