We are doing our project on the most flammable fabric softeners. Our experiment is going to be with rags and matches. We are going to take the rag out of the dryer when they have been dried with fabric softeners. Then we will put the match from different lengths away from the rags and see which different fabric softeners on the rags light faster or stronger. There are two reasons why we are doing this experiment. First of all because it is for safety of other people to know which softener is safer to use. The other reason is just for the good of doing the experiment and seeing which softeners are the most dangerous.
Our hypothesis is that the fabric softeners and liquid detergents will light faster than a normal rag. Our independent variable is the type of softener. Our dependent variables are how flammable the different fabric softeners are.
Since water is essential to life, the earliest people that lived close to water knew something about cleaning their bodies and clothes. There is great importance of cleaning and washing. If we did not have any soap or any detergents, we would all have a horrible and very strong disgusting smell. In 2800 B.C the ancient Babylon had evidence that there was soap that existed and was being made. He knew this because there was a soap material found in clay cylinders which proved and was evidence that soap making was known as early as 2800 B.C. Back then the soap was made and consisted of boiled fat with ashes. In 1950, they had new things such as automatic dishwasher powders, liquid laundry, hand dishwashers, and all proposed cleaning products. They also had fabric softeners with a rinse cycle added in. In the 1960’s, the people had invented more items for cleanness. They had pre-washed soil, stain removers for clothes, and laundry powder with enzymes. In 1970’s, the people had invented liquid hand soaps and fabric softeners that cleaned sheets and had a washed cycle added to it. In 1980’s, the people had made concentrated laundry powder. Concentrated laundry powder means that it is stronger and more efficient than normal laundry powder. In 1990’s, the people had super-concentrated powder and liquid detergents again, symbolizing that as the time passes the laundry powder gets stronger. They also had fabric softeners, automatic dishwashing gels, and laundry and cleaning products. Obviously now the technology today is much better on fabric softeners than in the past. There are so many different kinds of fabric softeners and liquid detergents now. Here are just a few different ones: Snuggle, Downy, Final Touch, Gain, Ox Soft, and Tide. All of these different name brand products do the same sort of thing, clean our clothes. All of these items make fabric softer or more pleasing to touch. Softeners and detergents also act as a impart fluffiness and the smell of your clothes. Softeners and detergents are added to home washing machines or drying machines during a rinse cycle or as part of a detergent/softener combination product, or to the clothes dryer.
To understand the field of importance and key ideas of our project you will need to know some things. As you know we are doing our project on the most flammable fabric softeners and liquid detergents. We will be finding the most flammable by measuring the speed of how fast the rags burn from a certain distance from the flame. But before we do all of this we will use the same type of rags washed in the different fabric softeners and liquid detergents. The importance and reason we are doing this experiment is to make people buy safer softeners and detergents. It has been known that clothes washed in fabric softeners and liquid detergents have lit while someone is smoking and folding there clothes. In our project we have mentioned enzymes. Enzymes mean chemical substance, produced in living cells, which can causes changes in other substances, without it changing itself.
Through out this project we will have problems that we will need to find a way around. The first problem that comes to our mind is we will need to use the exact same amount of liquid detergent in the wash so that one will not have more than another. In the same section of that we will need to use the exact same type of rag for the fabric softeners and liquid detergents, or else our expirement would not be accurate. Some of our other problems we will need to get by are the weather. For example we will need the same conditions if we do the experiment on different days. We will have to choose a day without and wind. If there is wind it might blow out the fire or the wind might die down at some points and change the speed of the rags being lit. One other easy problem is we will need the same type of fire fluid and it at the same setting of strength.
As we now know fabric softeners and liquid detergents have changed a lot since the time they were first invented. In the first paragraph we talked about the history, but now we will talk about what the future might have for fabric softeners and liquid detergents. In the future fabric softeners and liquid detergents may change a lot or nothing at all. If we were to choose what will happen to fabric softeners and liquid detergents, it would be that they change a lot. As fabric softeners and liquid detergents change, they will become less flammable and maybe not even flammable at all. They will have a new way to soften and make your clothes smell fresh. They might even invent a permanent drying machine for your clothes that always has a natural smell on the side of it. This means when clothes get rubbed against the side, the smell goes into the clothes. Soon maybe there will be some people that will not have to worry about smoking and folding their clothes at the same time. There can be many fears for the future of fabric softeners and liquid detergents. The fears can be that they might get more flammable and maybe even explosive if not invented carefully. This might not be such a fear, but fabric softeners and liquid detergents might turn into nothing because inventors or scientists are worried that they are too flammable so they might try to invent something less flammable that doesn’t even work. Fabric softeners and liquid detergents have been a great invention for avoiding bad smells.
