Method

  1. Get all the supplies that are mentioned in the apparatus.
  2. Cut one of the filters with the box-cutter or scissors into a shape that will fit into the fish tank.
  3. Trace the shape of the fish tank onto one of the sheets of paper and cut it out with the scissors.
  4. Put glue on one side of the traced and cut out sheet and place it on the bottom with the side that has glue on it facing upwards.
  5. Tape the part of the filter that was cut out above the paper. Not to close to the paper, but not to far away either.
  6. Put black pepper in a teaspoon, and equally pour it over the filter. If some falls through at the beginning, it is ok.
  7. Shave a teaspoon of a piece of chalk into chalk-dust using the knife, and be very careful not to cut yourself.
  8. Pour the teaspoon of chalk-dust equally over the filter and if some falls through at the beginning, it is ok.
  9. Use the hair-dryer to blow on the chalk-dust and pepper with the same amount of poweras it would be in a real filter. Do this for two minutes and don't put the hair-dryer too close to the filter. Time this with the watch.
  10. After the two minutes turn off the hair-dryer and take the filter and paper out of the fish tank.
  11. Do the whole project again from steps #2-ll, but this time use a different filter.
  12. After you have tried the two different filters, compare the results to find out which filter is better by seeing which filter trapped the most chalk-dust and black pepper and see which one let the least amount through. If the filter did what I have just mentioned, than it is the better filter. When you know which filter is better, you will become a dust buster.

Left:Clean filter before being put in a furnace. Right: Filter after being taken out of a furnace with lots of fine powdery dust accumulated.(not from project)
