I) Planting/ Setup Process

Materials:

-5 plastic containers
-38 L sphagnum peat moss-soil mixture
-36 L distilled water
-500mL measuring cup
-1m plastic tubing
-2 water pumps
-100 small arrowhead plants
-3 grow lights
-2 small tees

1) Place 8.5 L of sphagnum peat moss-soil mixture into each container.

2) Pour 6L of distilled water into Models A and B. Pour 4L of water into models C and D, and 8L into the last container, Model E.

3) Plant 20 arrowhead bulbs in each container.

4) Cut plastic tubing into four 15 cm pieces and two 10cm pieces. Using the 10 cm pieces, attach each pump to a tee. Attach two 15cm pieces to each tee and place the open end of each piece of tubing into each of the 4 models*. Secure with a piece of duct tape to the edge of the container.

* Due to the setup of the room in which the plants were kept and the position of the grow lights, it was necessary to rotate the models each night. So, each day, one of the containers was not aerated and not directly under the grow lights. Note: All models were aerated during gas sampling procedure.
