Thousands of years ago people thought that
vinegar, lemon juice, and lots of other foods tasted
sour. It was only until a few hundred years ago that
it was discovered why these substances taste the way
they do. It is because they are all acids. The word acid
comes from the Latin term Acere, which means sour.Robert
Boyle, and English writer and chemist, firt labelled substances
as either aicids or bases, in the Seventeenth century. This is
of the following characteristics:

1. Acids taste sour, corrosive to metals, change litmus
red and becomes less acidic when a base is added.

2. Bases are slippery, litmus turns blue and becomes less
acidic when an acid is added.
