Flowers have a pre-set or pre-determined life that is established by the plant(or its genetics). Some flowers last a day while others last up to several months (on the plant). With proper care, some flowers will last up to a few weeks.
Flowers need a source of food and water to live. Some substances have a food(sugar) that may help the flower live a bit longer. Water is supplied in thevase (where the substances are dissolved).
However, the sugar alone in the vase will promote the growth of bacteria and fungi, clogging the xylem (part of the stem that takes up water). So, and idealfloral preserative has a blance of sugar and an acid (to deter the bacteria andfungi from growing) to extend post-harvest life the most.
For our project we wanted to find out which type of flower lasted the longestin fertilized and non-fertilized water.
Our hypothosis was that the rose would last the longest in non-fertilized waterand the daisy would last the loongest in fertilized water according to theflourist at Save On Foods. We decided to do ur project on flowers because we likethem, they smell good and they are pretty.
Our plan was to purchase three different kinds of flowers, place them in equalamounts of water (three fertilized and three non-fertilized) and observe whichspecimen lasted the longest in each type of water.
"Carnations are the longest lasting flower you are able to purchase in BritishColumbia." So said the the florist from The Flower Boutique in Naniamo.
