In the year 2000, ten percent (amounting to 2.6 million bushels) of Canadian grown apples were from Nova Scotia. Apples are exported and marketed primarily for their nutritious values. They could have potential health benefits as well. As apples are commercially important, the isolation and identification of neuroprotective compounds from it will increase its export value. Anti-oxidative and free radical scavenging activities of flavanoids are well known. Elucidating its neuroprotective activity and mechanism of action would have tremendous application in the medical field especially in treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. The data collected in this experiment was solely through in vitro experiments. These in vitro studies need to be validated by in vivo studies as both these approaches may lead to some interesting findings. However, the preliminary results look promising. By determining a protective concentration of an extract (50 µm gallic acid equivalent), we can conclude that, in a synergistic way, the flavonoids in the Red Delicious extract can prevent cell death induced by oxidative stress.
