My hypothesis is that if the dog started sleeping with the lights on then they will not wake up because, when you start to sleep with the lights on you get used to have the lighter kind of darkness, however, when sleeping with the lights off there is a darker darkness then when the lights are on so you will really notice when the lights are turned on.
