Hail

Hail stones are little balls of ice made up of layers. One stone has a diameter of about 1-4cm. But the biggest hail stone measured 19cm in diameter! and it weighd 766g! the form of a hail stone is nomally round but it can also be something strange, like a ball with 8 arms protruding from the bottom. Hail starts with one little ball of ice which formed because if was so cold up in the clouds that the water vaper froze. the ice gets blown up higher by the wind. as it goes up it gathers water that hasn't frozen. When it gets to the highest point the water freezes and adds a layer to the ball. This goes on, and on, and on untill the wind can't support the ice and BOOM! it falls.

Hail can be very dangerous because when people drive their cars in a hail storm the windsheild can easily be broken or the roof can bend in. Hail also can hurt plants. There is a place where hail falls alot. it's called the "Hail Alley". It goes from texas to Montana. Farmers there have to be extra careful because all the hail kills their crops. We can stop hail. scientists from Russia found a non-toxic chemical that they shot in to the hail clouds. The hail fell as harmless rain!
