It took a long time for scientists to make progress in their research of genetics, because every time there was a scientific breakthrough, the church would oppose it-sometimes they would even burn books and proofs! There were many theories that were completely absurd on this subject! For example there was a man who thought that flies were born out of dead corpses and for a while people thought that people started perfectly formed, but very very small!

Here are a few important dates in the history of genetics :

1665-Robert Hooke discovered cells

1883-Robert Brown discovered the nucleus(center) of molecules

1866-Gregor Johann Mendels research was published (there is more on this subject below)

1868- Freidrich Miescher discovered nucleins(now called DNA)

1888-G.Waldyer names chromosomes

1909-Garrod suggested that deformed cells could cause diseases

1937-Richard Goldschmidt discovered that genes are points on chromosomes

1953-Crick et Watsome discovered the structure of genes

1987-Genetically created plants start to grow
1997-Dolly, a cloned goat is born

Gregor Johann Mendel used pea pods to discover the heredity theories. He discovered the theory that for each recessive gene, there would be 3 dominant genes.

His work also lead to the discoveries of dominant and recessive traits, phenotype and genotype (external and internal appearance) and particulate heritage.

Gregor Johann Mendel was born on July the 22nd 1822 in Heizendorf, Austria. He was the only child of his father, a farmer  from  the  country. He studied math and biology at the University of Vienna. His  dream was to be a  professor, but he failed  the qualification exam. He died on January 6th, 1884.
