How Does the Ord's Kangaroo Rat Survive in its Desert-Like Environment?

Ord's Kangaroo Rats have many special adaptations to help them survive in a desert habitat. First, they don’t need to drink water which helps them survive in dry areas. Second, they have very big hind feet, which keep them from sinking into the sand or snow. Third, they don’t sweat or pant so they don’t lose extra moisture. Fourth, they are nocturnal which keeps them away from the hot day temperatures. Fifth, they protect themselves from weather by living underground during the cold winter weather and during hot summer weather. Sixth, they have pouches on the outside of their mouths which let them carry and empty out the food without opening their mouths and losing moisture. Seventh, the kangaroo rat has twisting tunnels inside its nose which keep the temperature moderate. This also helps it not to lose moisture while breathing because most of the moisture condenses inside the nose before the kangaroo rat exhales. Finally, it has special kidneys that lets them keep as much water as possible. Therefore, the kangaroo rat’s special adaptations help its survive in its habitat.
