 The word seahorse is
‘hippocampus’ in Greek, which means ‘ bent horse’. Seahorses are
part of the Syngnathidae family. The snout of a seahorse is longer than
other animals’ snouts. Their heads are tilted. There are thirty-five
types of seahorses, and depending on the type, they measure between five
to thirty-six centimetres. Since seahorses are weak, they entangle their
tails around plants, so they don’t get carried away by currents. If
there isn’t another seahorse of the same kind in a tank, it goes in
search of another species. Their life span is about four years. They have
a dorsal fin in the middle of their bodies. . They have bony rings
around their bodies. The little mouth of a seahorse does not have any
teeth. They swim slowly with their prehensile and coiled tail. A seahorse
has crested gills, and the colour varies with the different types. They
can also camouflage themselves to protect themselves from prey.
