Summary: My partner and I were inspired to do this project because both of us have asthma and we were very interested to test the triggers. In this experiment we tested three non-asthmatic boys, three non-asthmatic girls, three asthmatic boys, and three asthmatic girls. We put them through trials that included exercise, exposure to smoke and perfume, and even an activity as simple as eating. Activities such as running increase the breathing rates of asthmatics. Exercise improves flow rate because when an asthmatic can’t get enough air, this prompts them to breath faster and heavier. During all other activities, asthmatics had a harder time getting enough air, and their breaths in liters per minute was lowered. We found out that asthmatics have a more serious problem of keeping their peak flow consistent than non-asthmatics, and that when inhalers are used after asthmatics did their activities, their flow rate of breathing was neutralized back to normal.
