Step 1. The volunteer was allowed to rest for 1 minute
while seated.
Step 2. The volunteer's heart rate was measured using
the LifeSource heart rate/blood pressure monitor.
Step 3. The first music track was played using a CD
player. When the track was completed, the volunteer's
heart rate was recorded.
Step 4. The volunteer's heart rate was recorded after
playing each of the 7 music tracks. The music tracks
were played consecutively, in the same order for each
volunteer as follows:
a) Classical: First Movement (Morning) by Peer Gynt
b) Bollywood: Dholi Taro from the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
c) Rock: Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
d) Disney: Hakuna Matata from The Lion King
e) Popular: Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
f) Relaxation: Caribbean
g) Jazz: Come Away With Me In The Night by Nora Jones
Headphones were not utilised, however the volunteer
was tested in a quiet room with no other person present
except the person recording the heart rate.
The volume of the music played was kept constant.
A total of four volunteers were used:
Volunteer A - Female, age 44
Volunteer B - Male, age 48
Volunteer C - Female, age 15
Volunteer D - Male, age 18
The volunteers did not suffer from any medical
conditions that would affect the results.
Step 5. The results were recorded, charted and
converted to a bar graph.
