Abstract

Allergies are a significant reality for a large portion of the population.  The common treatment, known as antihistamines, often carries side effects. This study tested the effectiveness of vitamin B3, niacin, on allergy symptom relief.  Ten participants took doses of niacin for seven days.  They filled out daily surveys reporting on their symptom relief and any side effects they felt the niacin had provided.  Overall, eighty percent of total symptoms experienced were reported alleviated.  The most common side effect was a temporary, red, tingling flush which disappeared over time.  The data collected in this study indicates that niacin did provide some allergy symptom relief to the participants.  There is a need to further examine the potential use of niacin for its positive effects on allergies.

Hypothesis

The purpose of this study is to examine if niacin plays a role in the alleviation of allergy symptoms.  A daily dose of 250 mg of niacin, vitamin B3, will relieve allergy symptoms.
