What
is it?
The pollution made by boats is what comes out of them and pollutes the environment.
This pollution goes to two places: the atmosphere and the water. The smoke,
which is about 50 percent of that pollution, goes into the air and atmosphere
and pollutes the environment. The other 50 percent consists of hydrocarbons
or gasoline that drips into the water and pollutes the ocean, the rivers and
the lakes.
What comes out of boats?
The water pollution made by hydrocarbons, often toxic, is especially worrying. 95 percent of all hydrocarbons are carbon dioxide. A large proportion of gasoline traverses the engine without being burned. In other words, the gasoline is dumped in the water.
At
an average, 35 percent of carburant escapes. About 50 percent of that quantity
goes into the water in the form of CO2 and the other half goes into the atmosphere.
Since the carburant has at least 3 percent of benzene, the 50 percent that goes
in the air is dangerous for the health of people that breath nearby the boat.
For a long time, we have understood the damages that affect the water by mineral oils. These substances are toxic for micro-organisms et phytoplankton. The non degradable elements that end up in the water can cause chronic poisoning or even destroy an ecosystem.
Each year,
all the engine powered boats consume about 15 million litres of gasoline. When
the fuel is used , 33 tons of CO2 evaporate into the environment. According
to estimations, 15 tons of gasoline are, without being noticed, thrown into
nature each year.
