Infection

With the arrival of the West Nile Virus comes the risk of infection.  However, the risk of infection by being bitten by an infected mosquito is low, as is the risk of you becoming seriously ill once infected.  Those who are exposed to mosquitoes where West Nile has been reported are at an increased risk of infection.

If West Nile is in your area don't panic, the chance of being bitten by an infected mosquito is small.  Even in areas where mosquitoes are carrying the virus, less than 1% of the mosquitoes in that area will have West Nile.  Also less than 1% of people who are bitten will becomes infected with West Nile, he or she will most likely build up an immunity to future infection of the virus.  This immunity will be life long.  Nevertheless, as they get older, as most things do, their immunity to the decreases.
