Conclusion

As of right now there are no pesticides that are safe enough, for me, to feel comfortable with them (the governments) spraying all over the country just to kill a mosquito.  The results of the pesticides have proven to be much more serious and dangerous and hard to control than the virus itself.

There are other options, besides pesticides and insecticides, to help control the mosquito problem which will then help to stop the spread of West Nile.  These options may not be as quick but they will cost less and have less environmental problems

  • Remove mosquito breeding habitat (i.e.: standing water)
  • Use meteorological data to identify weather patterns to show vector-born disease
  • Stock isolated water bodies with mosquito eating fish
  • Use sentinel birds to detect viruses months before they will infect humans

These options will save the country approximately 1 million dollars each year and it will save the country billions of dollars.
