¿WHAT IS THE RICHTER SCALE?

The Richter scale is how scientist measure the magnitude of an earthquake. It was invented in 1935 by Charles F. Richter from the Institute of Technology in California. On seismographs, (a machine that is used to measure the magnitude earthquakes) the magnitude is measured with crooked lines, but the Richter scale uses whole numbers and decimals.

How does it work?

When an earthquake occurs, a seismograph will measure the magnitude. These results will be sent to a science lab that will calculate that magnitude of the earthquake.
