Conclusion
We conclude that the G125A change that occurs in the promoter of the BAX gene in the Bax protein in non-small cell lung cancer is associated with poor prognosis. But we are unable to conclude the affect the change has on survival rate due to the fact that all our samples are still living and we are unable to associate it with survival.
Future Studies
If we are able to continue this project, there are several things we'd like to accomplish. If we were given more time, we would be able to wait and see how the patients respond to treatment, and so could find how to treat patients with the G125A change.
Also, an interesting idea for a future project would be to find a way to alter DNA and change the nucleotide back to a G. This could be done by site directed mutagenesis, which can alter a single nucleotide. If we discovered a way to initiate this change in the cancerous cells, then we could effectively increase how well the patient responds to treatment.
