Setup

The setup can be seen in the diagram to the right.

Stack three styrofoam cups. If using paper cups, you may want to insulate them somehow.

Set the pop bottle inside the cup upside down to check the height.  The bottom of the label should be about at the top of the stack of cups. If it’s higher, cut a hole in the bottom of the top cup, as shown in the picture, if it’s lower, you may want to cut the cups shorter.

Cut through the pop bottle about 1 inch from the bottom and cut a sponge to fit inside.  Cut a piece of fishing wire and tie a paper clip to the end to hold it down.  Attach the fishing wire to the sponge by poking a hole through the sponge.  Feed the wire through, and tie another paper clip to the other side.  Make sure the paper clip won’t touch the sides or top of the pop bottle.

Set the sponge in the bottom of the pop bottle.  Secure with straight pins through the bottle and sponge. Set the bottle bottom on the top of the bottle.

The setup is now complete. Repeat for as many experiments as you wish.
