Insulin and Diabetes

Some cells make special products like insulin.  The pancreas cell makes insulin for the body.  Insulin is needed to get glucose sugar into cells for energy.  Diabetic people don't have pancreas cells that make insulin for them, so then they can get insulin from an animal or have someone make human insulin by using human DNA.  First they put DNA coding for insulin into bacteria DNA, next they feed the bacteria cells to make insulin from special DNA, then they remove the insulin and give it to a diabetic person.

The pancreas is an organ in the belly that makes insulin for the body.

Insulin is made in special cells in the pancreas called beta cells.  Insulin helps you to keep alive and gives you energy by letting all the body cells use glucose (sugar).  If the pancreas cells get hurt, then no more insulin will be made.   People who don't make their own insulin have diabetes.  Diabetic people need insulin shots every day.

Giving An Insulin Injection

This is how some people give themselves insulin. Usually they get insulin from a bottle.

Scientists are trying to make it easier for a diabetic person to give insulin to themselves.  They are working on insulin patches, pills, pens and pumps.  The newest research is to transplant cells  that make insulin.
