Fangtooth (Anoplogaster cornuta)

Nicknamed the Ogrefish, this gruesome looking inhabitant of the deep thrives at depths of 16,000 feet, capturing any prey unlucky enough to swim or get sucked inside the Fangtooth's big mouth which form a trap. At these extreme depths the water is freezing cold, light non existent, and food hard to find, meaning  conservation of energy is very important. The fanghtooth often relies on zoo plankton floating vertically down from higher water boundaries. The Fangtooth is found in all tropical and temperate marine waters of the world.

The Fangtooth is well named, having two particularly long fang-like teeth that actually fit inside  sheaths, just like sword scabbards, only these ones are internal running alongside both sides of the brain when the fish closes its mouth. Dark brown to black, prickly scales cover the fangtooth's body, with  a mucous substance contained within cavities on its large head. The Fangtooth is a relatively short fish, obtaining a maximum length of 6 inches. Fishermen who occasionally bring these fish up in their nets must certainly be glad these grotesque looking fish don't grow bigger.
