The subject was a wheaten terrier dog aged seventeen months. He lives with a family in the West Vancouver area. The following materials were used for the dog training experiment:

1. Stopwatch
2. A high pitched whistle inaudible to the human ear. Dogs should be able to hear this whistle up to four hundred yards. The same pitch and frequency was used each time, for each trial of the experiment.
3. Dog food treats to serve as rewards for positive reinforcement. The same food treat was used each time, for each trial of the experiment. The treat was administered immediately to the dog following his return to the home, therefore the reinforcement was immediate and not delayed.
4. A pen and paper for recording observations.

The type of food treat and the pitch of the whistle were kept consistent throughout the trials of the experiment.
