Introduction

Genetic engineering is a technology that can trace it's roots back to a time as early as the 1800s. Although this is so, it is still considered to be in it's infant stage. Research has given us much insight and information about the secrets locked inside a living cell, but there are still many things that we have yet to understand.

By definition, genetic engineering is the means of deliberate manipulation of an organism's genes by human intervention. The nature of this particular area of study have raised a great deal of controversy over the years. Ethical, moral and health concerns are often the number one arguments against the further exploration of genetics.

The aim of this webpage is to give a general overview of what genetic engineering is. You will discover the role that it has in society and what researchers hope to achieve with this technology.
