This is my third year of entering the Virtual Science Fair. The first year I did an ok website on Biosphere 2. Last year, I did an experiment to find out what deodorizer killed the smell in hockey bags the best, and I really enjoyed working with that. I enjoyed working with that because it was something relevant in my life. Something that actually meant more to me than just a research project. It kept me interested in what I was doing, and forced me to thrive to do my best.
When thinking about a topic this year I was stuck between two particular ideas. The 'Endurance of Hockey Stick Tape’ (oh, so boring) and 'Just Rollin' Along' which is a project about roller hockey wheels. As you can see, I chose 'Just Rollin' Along' because it was more interesting and could make me stay focused on the task at hand.
Finally, with my chosen topic in hand, I recruited some guys to come out and help me do my testing. Micah and Troy were a huge help. These guys stayed focused, and were pretty much great guys all around. They made this project more of a fun thing, than something like a school task. Thanks guys.
I’ve played roller hockey for 5 years. After many wipeouts, crashes into the boards, and humiliating falls while no one was around me, I asked myself, “Can certain wheels help me from not doing this?” So I thought up some tests I could do to prove some things. These tests included, The Speed Test (how fast can you skate around the rink?), The Turn Test (how tight can you turn around a face-off dot?), The Stop Test (can you stop within 1 foot of the blue line?), The Glide (after a one-foot push off, how far can these wheels glide?), and The Snowplow (there you go, skating full speeds backwards, can you stop in time?). The results were very intriguing and I hope you find them as interesting as I did. Have Fun!
